Pink Muhly Gras (Muhlenbergia capillaris)
The hairawn muhly, commonly referred to as pink muhly grass (muhlenbergia capillaris), is a perennial grass about 30–90 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide that grows to be about 30–90 cm long in its mature form. This plant is native to eastern North America, and it can be used in a wide range of ways, including ornamental gardening and farming. This grass is also knwn as pink grass, muhly grass or gulf muhly.
A double layer of leaves surrounds the understory, and the purple-pink flowers grow out of it from the bottom up. While the leaves remain green during the summer, they turn copper during the fall. Flowers are affected by the seasonal changes as well, as they grow during the fall and stay healthy until autumn ends. The muhly can be found along the borders of roads and on plain prairies. A clump of grass forms a bush-like establishment in the area the Hairawn Muhly inhabits. They add a cloudlike appearance to the grass with their feathery appearance.

How to Grow and Care Pink Muhly Gras
It is an attractive addition to any garden due to its beautiful bloom clusters and abundance. It is best to plant these plants in the spring or in the fall, at least a month before the first frost is expected.
The clump can also be planted in a pot completely alone, or you can incorporate it into a mixed-plant container as the tallest focal point. Despite adverse conditions that are unaffordable for other landscape plants, this plant blooms profusely, even under neglect.
Growing from seeds
Gulf muhly seeds are easy to germinate, but wait a season to see blooms after starting seedlings in the ground. The seeds can be collected after the vibrant pink or reddish hues of the flowers fade in the fall. The plume of dried flowering grass can be combed to release the seeds while leaving some intact for winter interest.
Seeds should be planted early in the spring, either inside or outdoors if the climate is favorable. In order to germinate, pink muhly grass seeds must be planted on soil but not covered. The seeds should start sprouting in about two weeks after being misted with water to maintain moisture.
Growing by Division
In order to keep order and necessary spacing between plants, the pink muhly grass plants are usually divided every few years. Make sure to free the root ball of each plant by digging around the perimeter with a shovel or spade. The root ball should be split into two or three equal parts, depending on the plant’s size. Replenish the original hole with one part of the plant.
Sunlight
The pink muhly grass can be planted in either part sun or full sun. You should plant Pink Muhly Grass in a location that receives full sun, about 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, in order to obtain the biggest and most showy plants.
Soil
A key point to remember is that this type of grass needs dry, well-draining soil. The pH of the soil should be in the range of slightly acidic to neutral for this plant. The pH level of the soil will damage the plants if it is too high.
Watering
In the event that pink muhly grass is established, there is no need for regular irrigation as rainfall will suffice. These grasses prefer
dry soil and are drought-tolerant. If the rainfall isn’t enough to supply 1 inch of water per week, you will only need to water the plant after its roots take hold and it grows.
Fertilizer
A plant like pink muhly grass generally does not need high soil fertility. In order to get transplants off to a healthy start, it is advised to apply 10-10-10 fertilizer (or an organic equivalent) to the planting site according to the label directions. Following that, a slow-release fertilizer applied in spring as the new growth emerges will ensure the plants are well-fed for the entire growing season.
Pruning
Cutting back this perennial plant in the late winter or early spring will benefit it in the long run. Clean and disinfect your pruning shears with 70 to 100 percent ethanol or isopropyl alcohol before pruning. It is best not to cut too closely to the crown of the plants; at least 3 to 4 inches should be sufficient. Pink muhly grass produces beautiful plumes of flowers in mid-to-late summer, so pruning this plant during this time can interrupt the production of those flowers.
