The Poinsettia plant (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is an important commercial plant. It is native to Mexico. There are more than 100 cultivated varieties of this plant. It is famous for its red and green leaves. People mostly use it for Christmas decorations and floral displays. Many people consider it a holiday plant for December.
The plant is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett. He was the first United States Minister to Mexico. He introduced the plant to the United States in 1825.
The scientific designation of Poinsettia is Euphorbia pulcherrima.

It is classified as a shrub or a small tree. Primarily, it is cultivated as an indoor plant. This plant requires ample morning sunlight. Its foliage exhibits a variety of colors, including red, yellow, pink, and bi-colored variations. It thrives in warm climatic conditions.

Pollination

Propagation:

After some time, seed pods will appear near the stalk. When the plant starts drying, collect the seed pods. Store them in paper bags in a dry place. After drying, the seeds can be easily collected.
It is indeed possible to propagate poinsettias from cuttings, which is a widely used method. To do this, take cuttings that are 3-6 inches long from healthy stems, optionally dip them in rooting hormone for better results, and plant them in a moist, well-draining medium such as a peat/perlite mix. Ensure that the cuttings are placed in a bright, humid location with indirect light until roots develop over the course of a few weeks.

Growing Poinsettia Plant in a Container:

• Choose a medium-sized pot, fill it with well-drained potting mix, peat moss, and compost. This helps the plant get enough nutrition and water.
  Plant the poinsettia in spring or summer, and cover the roots completely with soil.
• Water the plant until excess water drains out. Water again only when the soil surface becomes dry. The soil should remain moist, not wet.
• Place the plant near a south-facing wall. Give it full sunlight until the end of September.
• From October, cover the plant with a cardboard box for 14 hours every night, making sure the box does not touch the leaves. Continue this for about 8 weeks.
• In December, place the plant in your home or courtyard; short and cool winter days help the leaves turn bright red.

Poinsettia care

• Poinsettia needs good light, proper water, and the right temperature. Keep the plant away from direct sunlight.
• Place it near a bright window; do not frequently change the position of the pot. Sudden temperature changes can damage the plant.
• Water only when the soil starts to dry; overwatering can kill the plant.
  Use organic fertilizer once a week.

Fall care

• In the fall, the plant enters a resting stage, and leaves may fall off during this time. This is a very sensitive period; move the pot to a cool and well-ventilated place. In early spring, repot the plant. Use a slightly larger pot and fresh potting mix.
• During extreme cold, keep the plant indoors, and avoid strong afternoon sunlight in summer.
• At the time of severe cold, you can keep the poinsettia outdoors. But avoid the afternoon of intense sunlight, as it is less approachable.

Diseases

Poinsettia plants can suffer from diseases; most diseases are fungal.
Some can be bacterial or caused by pests.
