A bonsai tree is almost any perennial or woody tree or bush species, a plant which produces multiple branches and whose branches and crown pruned can be planted in the pot. This is a long-term process.

Growing trees for Bonsai

  • There is a different method to propagate trees suitable for bonsai purpose. Many woody perennials and even some tropical plants can be made into bonsai trees, but not every species will be appropriate for your unique location.
  • Place a plastic net at the base of the container for proper water drainage. Now add the specially prepared bonsai soil made of garden soil, cow manure,  sand, and organic manure. Trim 1/2 to 1/3rd of the existing roots of the plant. leaving most of the thin white roots (known as feeder roots) and some old thick roots. Plant the tree into the pot.

NOTE– If the soil is good, the tree will take a few months or even a year to grow, and two years for fruits to flower.

  • Decide whether you plan on having an indoor or outdoor tree. The indoor and outdoor bonsai trees can vary drastically. Generally, indoor environments are receiving less sunlight than outdoor environments, so you’ll want to choose trees with lower light and moisture requirements.

As Indoor: Ficus, Hawaiian Umbrella, Serissa, Gardenia, Camellia, Kingsville Boxwood.
Outdoor: Juniper, Cypress, Cedar, Maple, Birch, Beech, Ginkgo, Larch, Elm. Note that some of the hardier varieties, like junipers, are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, provided they are properly cared for.  Read more.

NOTE- For the flower and fruit bonsais, four to five hours of direct sunlight is essential.

Pruning

Generally, you have to prune the roots and the foliage. Pruning bonsais are one of the more enjoyable aspects of growing bonsais. If their growth is not adequately controlled, trees can easily outgrow their containers.

Roots

Due to small containers, Dwarfed ornamental tree roots are stunted in growth. By pruning roots, you will ensure that there is space for the new roots to grow, which is critical for the health and growth of the bonsai. Cut any large, thick roots and any upward-facing roots, slender roots that will sit near the surface of the soil. Prune roots twice a year and change the soil when it’s done.

Foliage

This is vital for aesthetic purposes. Workout a specific design in the mind for your tree and shape it into the form you desire. Removing dead leaves.

Shaping

To create a required shape, you can use a wire (copper wires are any ) to assist the branches to grow as per your design. Make sure that the wire is of the right thickness and does not break the branches. Hold the branch you are wiring in both hands and carefully wind the wire around it.

1. Select the plants which can be easily trimmed and shaped, and ones with rough bark.
