How to Grow Hyacinths
Soil and location
There is not much information regarding the pH of hyacinth soil, but these plants prefer neutral to slightly acidic silts. If the soil is heavy, then it needs to be amended because it does not tolerate much-wet soil.
Hyacinth bulbs will give you flowers for many years to come, so you should prepare the soil well. The soil with a well-organic mixture gives the plant good growth and drainage. Hyacinth plants grow well in full sun and tolerate partial shade.
Propagation
Use bulbs for propagation, you can bury the bulbs in the soil and get new plants for the next season. It can also store hyacinth bulbs and make new plants.
Water
First-year, water your planted bulbs properly and remove weeds. If there is no water in your area, then water it in winter also. Keep good drainage, as it may rot if there is too much moisture around the bulb.
Fertilizer
Give fertilizer in the hole at the time of planting to encourage new bulbs to bloom easily. You can use a simple bone meal for this. Feed the bulbs before they flower in spring. This will encourage new growth.
Planting Hyacinths bulbs
- Fall is the most suitable time to plant hyacinth. By planting this time you can enjoy their magnificent colors and fragrance in spring.
- About 6-8 weeks from the onset of severe cold is a good time to apply hyacinth, or when the temperature in your area is below about 60 degrees F.
- The soil of the bed you want to start, loosen the soil well, and improve the soil by mixing organic material.
- Dig about 4 inches deep in the garden and add some bone meal or good organic matter to the soil.
- Now place the bulb appropriately in it, making sure that the root end (ie the wide part of the bulb) should remain below.
- Place the bulbs in rows and at least 3 inches apart.
- Cover these bulbs with soil, and water well.
- Apply slow-release fertilizer with 5-10-5 formula when the leaves start appearing in spring.
How to grow Hyacinth in containers

- Fill the containers with good quality dry soil. It will work better if you use a commercial potting mix.
- Check the drainage thoroughly before placing bulbs in containers, because the tubers will rot if there is not enough drainage.

- For better performance, apply bulbs 6 “deep and 4” apart. Its bulbs are round, make a pit in the soil accordingly. Keep the bulb wide at the bottom.
- After planting cover the soil around the bulbs well. In the autumn, its roots start forming and flowers come in the spring.
- Do not panic when the plant dries, its leaves turn yellow in early summer and the plant starts drying up. This is the time of the rest of the plant. They will perform again in the next spring.
Hyacinth care
- Hyacinths care are easy; you can leave its bulbs in the ground from year to year, or pick up after flowering and later its leaves die.
- Keep good drainage for its bulb, as it does not like wet feet. Too much moisture can cause rot in it.
- When the blossoming flowers faded, cut the flowers back, but to keep the bulb alive, allow the leaves to turn yellow naturally before cutting.
- Hyacinth bulbs are the favorite food of rats and voles, keep them in wire cages for protection of bulbs. Or place a handful of chili, crushed oyster shells in wire cages or planting hole to grow bulbs safely.
- Be careful when storing bulbs or when planting, the dust coming out of its skin can irritate your skin. You can avoid this by wearing gloves.
